Felsőcsatár Greenschist with Quartz Veins – Felsőcsatár, Vas County, Hungary
This striking greenschist specimen comes from the historic Zöldpala (“Greenstone”) Mine in Felsőcsatár, a classic metamorphic locality in western Hungary. The piece displays the textbook features of greenschist: fine-grained, foliated green metamorphic rock rich in chlorite and actinolite, giving it its characteristic deep green and grey tones.
What makes this specimen particularly attractive is the presence of well-developed quartz veins running through the rock. These light-coloured quartz bands create a beautiful contrast against the darker green matrix, highlighting the tectonic forces and fluid pathways involved in the rock’s metamorphic history. Subtle rusty-orange iron staining adds extra visual character and helps reveal the complex structure of the quartz veining.
Origin: Felsőcsatár (Zöldpala Mine), Vas County, Hungary
Rock type: Greenschist (Zöldpala)
Features: Distinct quartz vein network providing excellent visual contrast
Size: ~12(L) x 6(H) x 3(W) cm (see scale cube), 370 g
A distinctive and unusual specimen, ideal for collectors seeking authentic Hungarian metamorphic rocks or visually rich teaching pieces.
