Felsőcsatár Greenschist Specimen – Felsőcsatár, Vas County, Hungary
This striking greenschist specimen comes from the classic Zöldpala-bánya (“Greenschist Mine”) near Felsőcsatár, Western Hungary—one of Central Europe’s best-known localities for low-grade metamorphic rocks.
This piece displays a bold contrast of dark green–black chlorite-rich zones crossed by lighter epidote–actinolite veins, forming an eye-catching natural fracture network. The structure reveals exactly how fluids moved through the rock during metamorphism, depositing pale green minerals along cooling cracks. Under light, the dark surfaces reveal a subtle silky sheen, typical of fine-grained schistose material.
Origin: Felsőcsatár (Zöldpala Mine), Vas County, Hungary
Rock type: Greenschist (Zöldpala)
Features: Dark chlorite-rich matrix cut by pale green epidote/actinolite vein network for strong visual contrast
Size: ~7(L) x 7(H) x 7(W) cm (see scale cube), 370 g
A solid, weighty hand specimen, ideal for collectors, display shelves, or geology teaching sets.
